Is it important to differenciate between on and off line communities?

My small research between community managers in quora  as well as media theory texts people point out the importance of making a differentiation between online and offline communities.

Community has long been a preoccupation for the human sciences. Virtuality has rendered such concerns more explicit because unlike face-to-face interaction the Other in the virtual world is elsewhere even if she is treated like a neighbour. Even inside companies and specially inside the globalized, distributed world.
My take is that online communities are as such, an instance of the contemporary preoccupation with the foundations of community.
